Why Is Reverse Osmosis Bad For You?

Sep 30, 2021 | Health Coaching

One of the things we regularly need to stay healthy is water. We’re often told to stay hydrated and when grabbing a glass or bottle to drink, we usually make sure we know where it comes from so we know it’s clean. For many, this means either using some sort of filtration device for the tap at home or grabbing a bottle of purified water. However, not all filters and bottles of water are the same. You need to ask, how is my water being filtered and purified? If the answer involves reverse osmosis, then there might be some bad news headed your way.

What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to separate unwanted molecules and large particles from drinking water. This process can remove many types of dissolved and suspended chemical species as well as biological ones, like bacteria, from water. This method of purification is used in industrial applications as well as making water potable.

There are many bottled water brands and at-home filter products that use this method. When you judge it solely on its ability to produce clean water, you’ll see that this is a good method at achieving that. However, reverse osmosis has negative effects associated with it and we cannot ignore these.

Negative Effects Of Reverse Osmosis

As mentioned, reverse osmosis is known to be an effective way to remove water impurities. What most don’t know however, is that it also removes beneficial minerals in water. Reverse osmosis removes 92-99% of beneficial calcium and magnesium. After analyzing hundreds of studies about demineralized or reverse osmosis water, the World Health Organization released a report that states that such water “has definite adverse influence on the animal and human organism.”

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Since the water doesn’t have enough minerals, it also leaches minerals from the body when consumed meaning that minerals consumed from food and vitamins are urinated away. Because there is a lack of new minerals coming in and more minerals are being excreted, the mineral and water metabolism in the body is compromised and has a negative effect on homeostasis mechanisms. All of this leads to the dilution of electrolytes dissolved in the body and may compromise the function of vital organs. Side effects at the beginning of this condition include tiredness, weakness, and headache. This can progress further and lead to muscular cramps and impaired heart rate.

What Water Should I Drink Then?

The good news is that we are aware of which brands of water use reverse osmosis in their purification process. Brands that you should stay away from include:

  • Penta Ultra-Purified Water
  • Propel Water
  • Dasani
  • Nestle Pure Life
  • Aquafina
  • Essentia
  • Core Hydration Nutrient Water
  • LIFEWTR
  • Arrowhead Fluoridated Water
  • Ozarka

You can also steer clear of reverse osmosis’ negative effects and gain other benefits when you drink other kinds of water such as Ozone water and Alkaline Ionized water.

Ozone water is made by treating water with ozone. It is known to have several benefits including anti-tumor and anti-cancer effects. It can slow tumor growth and stop the spread of cancer, especially when applied directly to the tumor. Along with this it’s also known to

  • Kill viruses, bacteria, fungi, and algae on contact
  • Breakdown harmful synthetic chemicals into less dangerous molecules
  • Purify the blood by rupturing the cell wall of microorganisms
  • Provide more oxygen to the brain
  • Boost the immune system

Alkaline ionized water on the other hand can be made by home filtration systems made by Tyent and Kangen water filtration machines. Alkaline water has many benefits and is still continuously studied today. Studies have shown that alkaline water has antioxidant properties that protect pancreatic beta cells, can improve bone mineral density, and may prevent osteoporosis. Studies have also shown that people consuming water with a high level of total dissolved solids (ie. High mineral content) have shown a lower incidence of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer with lower total mortality rates.
